ENTRY NO. 6: BUTTERFLIES // WHAT STATEMENT WILL YOU MAKE?

Species: Butterflies + Moths
Making Your Statement
I hope you’ve enjoyed getting to know the Butterfly + Moth Collection over the past few weeks. It’s been a joy sharing all the details with you!
But now that you know the story behind the designs… what do you do with all this info?
My hope is that it empowers you to wear your Statement Species piece with confidence.
Because it’s more than just a sweatshirt, tote, tee, or scarf. It’s a conversation waiting to happen.
When someone compliments your look, you’ll have an arsenal of things to say: fun facts, personal connections, and even conservation tips.
And remember, if something as small as a butterfly can stir such wonder, imagine the impact you can have!
Below are a few ways to make your statement.
INSPIRATIONAL STATEMENTS

- Share why you are drawn to butterflies. Maybe you planted a butterfly garden, or visited a butterfly house.
- Maybe butterflies remind you of transformation, of a time you grew through something hard and came out changed. Wearing that symbol can be a powerful reminder (to yourself and others) that growth is possible.
SCIENCE STATEMENTS
Above: Butterfly scales seen under a microscope
-
Explain that the design on your scarf was inspired by butterfly scales seen under a microscope!
-
Mention that the black and white dotted pattern (scarf, pocket of the tote bag) mimics butterfly spots, a clever survival tactic.
-
Point to your sweatshirt or tote bag and start naming off the species. "Oh that one? It's a Red Spotted Purple."
DESIGN STATEMENTS

- "This shade of yellow I'm wearing is inspired by the Tiger Swallowtail."
- "The butterflies you see on this tote bag are silhouettes of real butterflies."
FASHION STATEMENTS

- "My tee shows butterflies, and the scarf around my neck shows scales of butterflies seen under a microscope!"
- "Check this out: specimens on the tote bag, spots on the inside pocket, and a matching scarf with scales. The perfect trifecta!”
CONSERVATION STATEMENTS

Above: Baltimore Checkerspot
- "This butterfly here is the Baltimore Checkerspot and it's species is threatened within Maryland."
- "I'm wearing this to spread awareness of butterfly and moth conservation."
- Talk about why butterflies matter: they’re pollinators, food for other animals, and early indicators of ecosystem health.
- Share how anyone can help: planting native flowers, avoiding sprays, providing shelter.
- Talk about organizations doing work to help butterfly and moth populations.
